Free Pattern – Rayon Shirt and Blockheads 2020 | Block 1

Zen Chic’s Rayon from the Breeze collection has a beautiful drape and feel for a top like this one made using a free pattern.

A beautiful flowing top with Rayon and a free pattern!

When the BREEZE collection came blowing in it brought with it a very exciting and unique new fabric series – Rayon! Rayon is a brand new fabric substrate that Moda has added to my quilting cottons for the very first time. It’s so very soft and has a gorgeous drape to it that makes it perfect for dresses, shirts, blouses, skirts and children’s clothes.

The story behind the creation of Rayon is a fun one…

When I’m at Quilt Market I like to wear a dress from my own prints, but to make it a little more flattering I like to have a more flowing fabric – not like cotton, but rather like rayon or silk.

So, I printed one of my designs on a dress fabric – rayon – through a screen printing company. At Quilt Market visitors saw the material, liked it and wanted to know where they could buy it. The rest is, as they say, history! Moda started producing a couple of my prints on rayon and a new adventure in texture and feel began!

There are four different colors in this new beautiful fabric line – light blue, cornflower blue, teal and navy.

For this top, I mixed it up with a little bit of Chambray using a free pattern from Sorbetto. It can be made in different variations, and I like to have mine without a pleat in front, just simple and flat. On back I used Chambray and then stitched with thick white thread in straight lines. I added this little accent which was inspired by the Sashiko denim style. You can create any kind of variation of dress, skirt, blouse – anything you’d like to have a more flattering, flowing drape to it!

I even made a little dress for my granddaughter using the cornflower blue fabric… Isn’t she just lovely with her laughter and playing the role of a model?

The Rayon fabric series from Zen Chic’s Breeze collection is perfect for children’s clothing with its soft feel and playful drape.

And now on to kick off BlockHeads 3!…
