Sew the Town Square Pillow and Blockheads 2020, Block 11

Zen Chic’s JUST RED fabric collection makes this Town Square pillow pop.

A Stunning Accent

It really doesn’t take much to change the entire feel of a space. A perfectly placed portrait, a thoughtful arrangement of flowers, a carefully chosen yet simple decorative piece… Touches like these, even when seemingly “randomly placed,” give the sense of intention, thought and care that a room or space should feel inviting.

This Town Square pillow offers a visually captivating way to add a stunning accent to any room. With its clean lines, detailed intricacy and the interplay of colors and volumes, it not only draws the eye but holds it.

This pillow was made from a pattern that you can buy on Etsy. It’s a hand-sewn little block that can also be done with machine sewing if you’re a bit more experienced. I created my version using hand sewing, and it looks simply fabulous if you use low volumes for the middle square and frame it with little scrappy segments. For those scrappy segments, I used my most recent fabric line, JUST RED.

Purchase the pattern here.

This pillow was sewn by Sandra Schnadhorst

I was intrigued to give this pillow a try myself, and thought I’d use the neutrals – like grays and whites – from my SPOTTED collection to make myself a pillow for my gray couch.

On my travels on the train, I sat and made all the little hand-sewn units and pieced them together for the pillow front. My desire was to quilt my pillow to look as gorgeous as the one Sandra had made with circle echo quilting, but then life happened. So many other things came my way and in the end, I didn’t get to finish my pillow by quilting it and making a backside.

Would you like to have this pillow front?

I think this pillow should have a nice home to live in, so I will give my hand-sewn pillow front away for free! Someone who loves it can finish it and have it in their home. If that’s you, please share with me in the comments below why you like the black, white and gray color scheme and what other color scheme you might like to see in the SPOTTED fabrics.

UPDATE

The lucky winner of my hand sewn pillow front is Nancy Thown! Congratulations

And if you’ve been sewing along with us, we’d love to see your blocks in our thriving Facebook community or on Instagram using the hashtags #modablockheads and #modablockheads3. Stop by and say hello!

You can also take a look back at Blockheads 2, our last Moda Blockheads adventure to get an idea of what all the excitement is about. It was a great time with a wonderful community and new friendships, and this year is turning out fabulously as well!

Our block design this week comes from Robin Pickens. Robin is one of Moda’s modern designers, and her block is very versatile in appearance depending on how you place the fabrics in all those little pieces. I placed mine in a way that actually looks like a flower. I can’t wait to see how you’ll interpret Robin’s block design yourself!
