How to sew a Christmas Quilt with a Layer Cake & Blockheads 2018 - Block 9
You got a Layer Cake, maybe with a Christmas theme, and you want to sew a quilt out of it. Maybe you are even more kind of a newbie to quilting (or not). So here is my suggestion: Star In A Star quilt pattern. It uses the traditional piecing technique and you can make it totally traditional with your fabric choice, maybe a 3 x 4 setting layout and sashings between the blocks.
Or you go like me, make a bold stripe of blocks, keep the rest as a calm negative space, use modern fabrics and get a very modern, Scandinavian looking Christmas quilt.

The pattern got it's name from the block, obviously. Inside the large star there is a small one. The stars are actually not from the Christmas fabrics. I made them with a solid and the prints are the background, as if you look through the stars and find something more interesting. For the solid I choose the graphite grey. Sometimes it blends into the prints so close, that you can nearly see the star shape. But I like this subtle effect: Sometimes there is a great contrast, sometimes the star seems to disappear.
The quilting of the Star in a Star Quilt
To make the stars pop anyway, I stippled around the star shapes with filler quilting and left the solids blank. So they come up a bit. For the negative space (the upper and lower border) I created a quilting motif with stars on a garland.
And now up to the new block of our project Blockheads:

BLOCK 9
WITH A PLUS
Last week's block #8 was a more traditional one (hey, actually I found it quite cool and modern, depends totally on your fabric choice); and this week we get a kind of classic block: you can use it as well in traditional quilts as in modern ones. It is a simple Plus sign, and I personally think, that the simple things have the greatest potential to make something stunning. You may know Laurie Simpson from her classic style, often in patriotic colors. She is our host for block #9 today at Moda Blockheads 2018 (Round 2) quilt along.
Block 9, With a Plus
A cute 6" block, and I liked repeating the plus sign with my fabric pattern.
