How to get a perfect 1/4" seam every time, a Winter Mini Quilt and Block 34 of Moda Blockheads

The Benefit of Tackling the Perfect Seam Allowance

You probably know that it is difficult to get a perfect ¼ “ seam allowance. I see in my classes that even the most experienced quilters struggle to get that neat  ¼” seam. And true, it isn’t easy, but somehow so crucial. Because we want our blocks to fit in our quilt and therefore it needs to look perfect, right? Because whenever each seam just deviates 1 mm from the desired perfect size, a block with a couple of seams can get the wrong format in the end and won’t fit in the quilt.

So it’s very crucial to have this skill under your belt. Therefore, I made a complete tutorial on how to do that on my YouTube channel. Learn all about a self-made seam guide and the different pressure feet. How to take the thickness of your fabrics into account. And what to do when your block should end up a bit smaller or bigger.

Mini Quilt “Winter Village”

Now that you’ve practiced your seam allowances to be a perfect ¼” seam each and every time and you master the skill, I want to show you something I made with my Chill Mochi Linen Winter Panel. I call this mini quilt “Winter Village”.

For this cute mini quilt, I cut out one of the words (in a black font with a touch of gold), saying “Winter” and I framed that with a couple of little houses and trees. I made those houses and the trees using a variety of blue fabrics from the same fabric line Chill. Didn’t this just turn out to be a “cool” piece to hang on your wall?

This cute quilt was sewn for me by Christina Otte, also known at Instagram under minerva_huhn. Thank you, Christina!

If you wanna make this quilt for yourself or give it as a gift, you can find all the fabrics that I used, the Chill and Mochi Linen Panels, at your favorite quilt-stockist.

The pattern of this cute quilt you can find in my shop:

Another fun project I made with one of the sayings from the Mochi Linen Panels is this table runner.

Of course, the table runner pattern is for sale as well:

FREE QUILT ALONG BLOCKHEADS 2020
BLOCK #34
FULLFILLMENT

Of course, we have another Block for our year-long sew-along.

As you might know, we share a new block for our Moda Blockheads 3 each week. For the whole year of 2020, we have a Moda designer create a new block for us, which we share with you for free! It is up to you what you want to create with these blocks, but how fun would it be to make a sample quilt with all the blocks shared?

Wanna show other quilters which fabrics you’ve used or what you’re creating with the free Moda Blockheads patterns? Come join our community on Facebook and connect with other quilters.

On to this week’s new design. We have Lisa Bongean as our guest. She designed block nr. 34 for us, called “Fulfillment”.

We all know Lisa as being a quilter who has a “gazillion” pieces in a 4“ block! We are always kidding her on that. And again this time, she didn’t disappoint us. Lisa put together a block with a lot of pieces. A block which is considered as quite tiny to sew, I may add. That might be challenging for some of us but let’s tackle that challenge together!

Don't miss the other blockheads involved in this project:
