When we’re about to change seasons, some of us would like to hang on to the one we’re leaving behind, like summer. Others can’t wait for a new season to start because it also means we get to change our wardrobes.

Changing into the fall season and heading to winter leads to more time inside our homes, which for a lot of us means more sewing and quilting. Maybe you’re ready for your next big project. In that case, I can highly recommend our Quilt Along.

A fun and quick project

However, if you’re looking to ease into sewing again and you have a few leftover fabrics, I found a great little project.

These cute headbands are very quick and easy to make. You could easily sew 5 or 6 of them within the hour, making these perfect for a quick gift to a friend or even a group of friends like your sewing retreat participants.

Or make yourself a couple matching your wardrobe. Certainly fun when you also make your own clothes. You don’t need much fabric to put a headband together and how charming will it be to complement that blouse you made.

An easy YouTube tutorial

I followed an easy-to-do tutorial on YouTube. In the video, all measurements are given and she shows you exactly how to put this cute headband together. I made mine from the Dance in Paris collection. 

Because the video doesn’t tell you exactly for whom this headband is made, I recommend, if possible, measuring the head of the one who is going to wear the headband. When that is not possible, you can use these measurements I found when I went surfing and snooping around on the internet (thanks to Amy from Peekeboopages):

• Newborn: 14″ / 35 cm

• Up to 1 Year: 17″ / 43 cm

• Toddler: 19″ / 48 cm

• Child: 20″ / 51 cm

• Teen: 23″ / 58 cm

• Adults: 24″ / 61 cm

Knowing that the headband is 75% top part and 25% elastic, you can do the math to calculate how big your pieces need to be. Oh and don’t forget to add the seam allowances.

When to make a cute headband

There are all kinds of situations where a headband like this one could come in handy. It’s a quick birthday gift for girls and women of all ages. And with Christmas approaching, a headband makes a nice and quick stocking filler. 

I like to use a headband when I clean my house. Just to keep my hair back and out of my face. But it’s also a fun touch to cheer up your outfit. Make a few of them matching a couple of outfits. 

Another thought is to fill up a fabric basket as a gift for a young mom and make matching headbands for mom and baby girl to put into the basket.

As you can see, making a cute and easy headband is always a good idea. So dig up those leftover fabrics and get sewing!
