Launching my new line SPOTTED with the quilt pattern SKY by Zen Chic

My new Zen Chic collections SPOTTED and MORE PAPER are both finally available in shops! We want to celebrate the sales launch by presenting you my specially designed quilt pattern SKY, which includes the whole color palette of my new line SPOTTED, and a plain, crisp white for the background, which makes the bright colors really pop.

The cool thing with this quilt pattern is: You can go with just 2 Charm Packs (solids, blenders or assorted prints) and some yardage for the background - which makes it an easy to shop material kit.

Sky is a modern take on the traditional Flying Geese block. The unusual asymmetric setting with a large negative space and the clear, saturated colors in all hues of a rainbow makes this quilt fresh and modern! Sewing is pretty easy, even a beginner can manage this quilt. You go with the easy stitch-and-flip-technique for Flying Geese.
I quilted mine with a very modern straight line quilting. The good thing about this technique is that you don’t have to work absolutely accurate. The irregular intervals and the slightly different angles of the lines cover little imperfections: It looks as if the irregularities are wanted. You can even do this with a domestic sewing machine.

FREE QUILT ALONG BLOCKHEADS 2018
BLOCK 31
INTERSTELLAR

Last week we worked on Block 30 in our Moda Blockheads 2018 (Round 2) quilt along project. This week we move on with block 31 hosted by Vanessa Goertzen of Lella Boutique. Her block combines a classic eight-point-star with a curved seam line in the background, which gives a modern touch to this traditional block motive. At the same time it is a challenging feature, especially for beginners, who have mainly worked with straight seam lines so far. Also the tiny little star points need an accurate sewing technique. So I used two simple tricks to facilitate the piecing process for this block.

To make sure that the star tips form a really nice pointed corner I use a scant 1/4” seam to include some tolerance for the seam fold. For the curved line in the background I wanted to avoid the effortful pinning needed for a traditional curved seam. So I used a raw edge appliqué instead with a small button hole stitch and a cotton thread. But I think it could be fun to use one of the possible zillion decorative stitches of your machine and maybe even a thread with a color contrast to bring in some extra embellishment.
