The final “Dance”, the final block

We are almost done with this Moda Blockheads Quilt Along. Can you believe it? How time has flown by! But we still have one more block to make.

The designer of that last block is Joanna Figueroa of figtreeandcompany.com. She called this block Star Dance. What a nice name for this last block. Just one more dance and the party is over.

But before you go, hop on over to the Facebook group because Moda is giving away one last Layer Cake. This time it’s one from Joanna’s line Fig & Shirtings.

It’s a little bit sad, we have had so much fun together making our sampler quilt. But we still have some work to do before the quilt is finished. We need to put it all together. People have sent us emails and messages asking about directions on how to put the quilt together. Of course, we are not going to disappoint you. So let’s take a look.

Detail of the background fabrics: I used low volumes from the PAPER and MORE PAPER collections by Zen Chic.

The assembling of the Zen Chic layout

Finished size approx. 81" x 81"

MATERIALS NEEDED: (we used fabrics from my line Paper and More Paper)

  • for the quilt center background: 4 assorted Low Volumes, each 3/8 yard

  • for the border: 2 3/8 yard of a low volume (could be the same print you're using for the quilt center background)

  • 2 1/2 yards of 108" extra-wide backing

  • 85" x 85" batting

  • 5/8 yards for binding (I picked a bright red from my line Spotted)

CUTTING:

From the assorted fabrics for the center background, cut a total of 40 squares, each 6 1/2" x 6 1/2"

For the border, split your border fabrics lengthwise in 4 equal strips, which should be about 10 1/2" x 85" (they are slightly longer, so you can adjust them to the actually needed length later)

ASSEMBLING:

Lay out the background fabric squares and pieced blocks according to the layout diagram (see layout with grid). Sew squares together to rows and join rows to build the quilt center, which should be 60 1/2" x 60 1/2" including seam allowances.

ADD BORDERS:

Sew two border strips to the left and right and shorten them so that they match the upper and lower edges.

Sew remaining border strips on top and bottom; trim ends to form exact corners.

MAKE A QUILTSANDWHICH, QUILT, and BIND:

For the quilting you have so much negative space that allows for wonderful intricate quilting, so do yourself a favor, spoil yourself, and indulge in the luxury of a custom quilted service, like the ones below (click on the pictures to visit their website).

The lady I bring my quilts to let them quilted is Rachel Hauser from Stichedincolor.com in the Netherlands. She did the beautiful quilting on my Winter Star Wall Quilt

That is it for this round of Moda Blockheads3 2020 Quilt Along. I hope you have enjoyed every step of it these 56 weeks. You have expanded your collection of different blocks, all free to use in all kinds of several projects.

And although this Quilt Along is over, we have something special for you to look forward to. We are currently preparing our very first very own Zen Chic Sew Along which will start this spring!
