Have you ever sewed a double wedding ring quilt before? Sewing circles is not for the faint at heart, right? And you would love to find something different than those standard quilting patterns with the beautiful double wedding ring block.

You’re in luck today. Because the second pattern in our series is the Paper Beauty quilt. It builds on the classic block of the double wedding ring but in a very modern version. The double wedding ring which is usually round in its classic format is now transformed into a square with curved corners.This makes for a special bold, modern look.

The size of Paper Beauty, a double wedding ring quilt

Double wedding ring quilts are often given as a wedding gift. Therefore Paper Beauty is originally designed in bed size, measuring 81” x 81” when ready. Of course, you can adjust it by making the border slightly wider or maybe a bit narrower. Just make sure the blocks are at the center of this quilt to keep everything balanced.

Another possibility is transforming the pattern to make it a twin-size quilt by using a set of only 3 rows and 2 columns. This gives you only 6 blocks instead of the original 9 and by changing the border to your needs, you’ll end up with a beautiful alternated quilt for your twin bed.

Fabrics for Paper Beauty

My recipe for this quilt is using a mix of low volumes from my collection Even More Paper and some colorful blenders from the Spotted fabric line. This pattern is so versatile regarding choosing fabrics because it can even be made with your scraps.

The blenders

Choosing the colors of the blenders, I thought about where the quilt would end up. I looked at the colors of the interior of the room and created a color scheme for my quilt. As a result, it has a lot of warm oranges, sunny yellows, fiery red. To balance it out, it also has a little bit of chartreuse and blue plus I added a tad of black for a striking effect. Of course, you can transform your color scheme more to blues or greens whatever suits you best.

Low volumes

As to the low volumes, I worked with a mix of light eggshell linen in different designs. However, for the cornerstones where the rings of the block are attached to each other, I used two different grays and built a chessboard-like pattern.

The vanilla white background calms the scrappy look and holds everything together.

Although this pattern is more for the advanced quilter, don't shy away from it. There are two techniques involved which we explain in detail in the tutorials on our YouTube channel. One technique is the curved seam. These are generous curves and we have a YouTube tutorial so it's absolutely doable.  

The other challenge is that the segments of the rings are put together with Foundation Paper Piecing to make it easy to achieve an accurate result. We also have a video tutorial on how to do Foundation Paper Piecing.
