We quilters and sewers always have scraps, right? I know I’m not the only one who hangs on to even the tiniest bits of fabrics. Especially when they’re from this new collection that we’ve been looking forward to for a while.
Tiny scraps of fabrics
You’ve cut your fabrics for your next quilting project and your table is covered full of scraps. So what do you do with them? Exactly, you put them in a box or fabric basket to use them again in the future. Sometimes you even want to hang on to the selvage edges of the fabrics, right? Some have real fun sayings you can use in a project. I don’t blame you, why waste a little treasure like that?!
Making my quilt Diamonds & Grey, I had some left-over scraps. Now I’m very fond of my fabrics, especially the latest ones I work with, so I have trouble throwing away even the littlest pieces of my beloved fabrics. So what do I do? I save them!
For this Diamond & Grey quilt, I used the Dance in Paris collection. I picked fabrics to fit in a specific color palette of greens, greys, whites, and blacks. I had a bunch of scraps in these colors, and I wanted to put them together into a fun little project.
A free pattern
On Instagram, I found this lovely pouch which actually was a free pattern from SOTAK Handmade. My friend Gaby Beck was willing to put together the pouch using that pattern and the scraps from the Diamonds & Grey quilt I mentioned earlier.
Good thing I saved all those tiny pieces because, for the checkerboard pattern, you just need little bits of fabrics. I already liked the checkerboard surface, but enhancing that surface with rough hand quilting stitches makes it even more attractive.
For the lining, Gaby used a green fabric from the collection called “Grass”. It matches the outside of the pouch perfectly. And I love how she also put a little extra touch on the zipper pull. Brilliant right?
Ideas for this pouch
A pouch like this can be used for all kinds of things. Think about pens & pencils or sewing notions. Use it as a makeup pouch in your bag or bring your phone, cash, or credit card when hopping in the car to go to the store for a quick errand.
Your kids can use a pouch like this for their earbuds, bus card, and some money. And you can even bring some female hygiene products with you in a fashionable way.
Make your own one now
All in all, a versatile project for which you probably already have the fabrics. All you need is a zipper and some batting. But chances are you also have those among your sewing materials.
If you make a pouch like this, I would love to see it. Share it on Instagram and tag me @zenchicmoda.
Happy sewing!
Joining hexagons can be a daunting and time-consuming task. Knowing how to do this properly using your sewing machine is a great skill to have under your belt. Watch the video tutorial by All People Quilt featuring the Day in Paris fabric collection.
