I’m honored and proud to be part of this magazine brimming with modern quilt inspiration – Simply Moderne from Quiltmania, issue no 19. This Quiltmania issue features The Festival of Quilts and the Modern Quilt Show Australia 2019.
And what’s more, I’m also featured in this issue with a quilt created from the Those Trees quilt pattern featuring the WHITE CHRISTMAS fabric collection. Read on to find out more!
In this issue of Simply Moderne, you will also find an article I recently wrote about visible mending, the technique used in the wildly popular sashiko denim style. You can also find out more about this exciting, edgy sewing trend in my recent blog post.
Visible mending is a unique technique that is completely conducive to self-expression and that brings a fresh, innovative design to clothing, accessories or home decor. It involves the use of applying swatches of fabric to a primary material using embroidery floss or thread. This design both showcases the stitches that attach the fabric and the visible stitches themselves that create patterns and designs. With this style, the sky is literally the limit when it comes to creating something completely unique and expressive.
Curious about visible mending?

You can see how I used this intriguing new design trend in the clutch I created below. The beauty of this style is that there is no ‘wrong’ – you decide the direction you want to go with your stitching and fabric and let your creativity run its course!
For this clutch, I incorporated TRUE BLUE with the sashiko denim style and a signature Aurifil embroidery thread in BREEZE hues… What do you think?

The quilt I created that was featured in this issue of Quiltmania’s Simply Moderne was made with the Those Trees pattern, using the WHITE CHRISTMAS fabric collection.
This quilt measures 58" x 71". It’s a modern Scandinavian-style approach to a Christmas quilt and includes two ribbons of trees run through a lap size quilt.
The technique used for sewing the trees is Foundation Paper Piecing. The borders provide lots of negative space, which can be quilted with a simple edge-to-edge panto (like my version using trees). This creates an extra fluffy feel, resulting in a cozy quilt to cuddle in.
You can also quilt with a freehand embellishing style. The wide negative space in this design gives you enough room to express your own unique quilting approach. As well, a more dense quilting style as seen in this pattern is the perfect fit for a bedspread.
