This week we continue with block 8 of our mutual Zen Chic Block of the Month sew along project. Again we have three different units, two of them are already known from earlier blocks, and we introduce a new one, the kite unit.
For the new kite unit (see row above, on the very left) you get the most precise results by using foundation paper piecing, which I already introduced in block 5. Again, if you learn best by watching a video on how to do, here is one (of many).
So, lets make the kite unit together. First you print out the template sheet 4 times, making sure your printer’s dialog is set on “actual size” (pic 1)
For the 4 units, cut from four different colors each a piece 6 1/2” x 4 1/2”;
and from the low volumes, cut 8 rectangles 6 3/4” x 3 1/2” and two squares 3 1/2” x 3 1/2”. Split these squares diagonally in halves to yield 4 triangles (pic 2)
Start by placing a low volume and a colored right sides together onto the blank side of the paper template (low volume is on paper, color on top of it, pic 3);
Turn paper around, so that the printed side faces you and hold everything against a light source. Maneuver the both fabrics in place so that the low volume rectangle covers template section A1 and the edges of the patches extend the printed stitching line by 1/4”. Pin in place (pic 4)
Sew on stitching line between A1 and A2, using stitch length 1.5 (pic 5)
Open pieces and press (pic 6)
Turn back to the printed paper side, flip paper over at the next marked stitching line between A2 and A3, trim colored fabric patch back to leave just 1/4” seam allowance (pic 7)
Turn back to the fabric side, place the next low volume rectangle on top of the colored piece, edges matching, and pin in place (pic 8)
Turn back to the printed paper side and sew on stitching line between A2 and A3.
Repeat Step 4 to 7 to sew on the small low volume triangle (pic 9 and 10). Trim off excess fabric to the seam allowance printed on the paper template 8 (pic 11). Remove paper and have your finished unit (pic 12)
That wasn’t hard to do, was it? Can’t wait to see your result of block no8. Share your personal interpretation with the other quilters of our Zen Chic BOM sew along using our hashtag #SPOTTEDMOREPAPER on instagram and our facebookgroup.
