This week we continue with block 6 of our mutual Zen Chic Block of the Month sew along project. It’s a simple block with a striking big plus in the middle, which makes it easy to piece, because most elements are straight line piecing.
Again - watch out for our pattern errata sheet. The corrections for block 6 say:
From the colored prints cut:
(B) 5 rectangles 4 1/2” x 2 1/2” (one is for the center Plus Sign)
(C) 2 rectangles 2 1/2” x 1 1/2” (for the center Plus Sign)
One basic element we are working with in block 6 is the square-in-a-square-unit. The instructions use the method to attach single triangles onto an on point square.
However - you can also use the alternative method of the stitch-and-flip-technique as explained in the Flying Geese units of Block 4.
In this case you would cut for one unit:
1 low colored square 4 1/2" x 4 1/2"
4 low volume squares 2 1/2" x 2 1/2"
You start with the stitch-and-flip-technique in one corner and proceed with the opposite corner. Once you have trimmed, flipped and ironed the low volume triangles, you attach two more in the remaining corners. The finished unit should measure 4 1/2" x 4 1/2".
And that's it! Wasn't that easy?
I hope you enjoy the simplicity of this block in sewing and share your personal interpretation with the other quilters of our Zen Chic BOM sew along using our hashtag #SPOTTEDMOREPAPER on instagram and our facebookgroup.
