Japanese quilting
Are you familiar with Japanese quilting? Did you know that the Japanese are eager to use scraps in their quilts? They don’t like to waste any good materials. And we quilters, we all feel the same, right? Why would we throw away perfectly good fabrics?
However, we also like to buy new fabrics. Especially when a new collection has come to market. To accomplish that scrappy look from the Japanese quilts, we can buy new fabrics in little “scraps” in a Fat Eighth Bundle. Although maybe the 9” x 21” pieces of fabric aren’t really scraps in the true meaning of the word.
The X & + quilting block
To accommodate the scraps the Japanese like to use, they have this fun block, the X & + block. This is a very popular block and it’s what we use in our featured quilting pattern today.
In fact, this block is so popular, I’m using it for the third time already. I’ve used it with the Comma collection, then the Day in Paris line, and now it also features the Celestial fabrics. Each time it is so well received. And I can see why. It is an easy pattern to kit because you only need to buy one Fat Eighth Bundle for the quilt top.
Materials for Zen Chic’s X & + quilt
A Fat Eighth Bundle gives you the complete variety of prints you need for this quilt. The scrappy look is the charming part of this pattern. It doesn’t matter where we put which color and that’s what makes it so easy to play around. You just can’t do anything wrong to get that scrappy feel we’re looking for. How fun is that!
In addition to your Fat Eight bundle, you just need a very calm background fabric. In our example, it’s the medium grey (Bella Solid Silver) that holds everything together.
The Celestial collection for an industrial look
Using the Celestial collection you can create a beautiful industrial styled look quilt. As you can see on the photo below this quilt in these fabrics look so cool together with the leather couch. It suits an industrial interior very well.
I get a lot of compliments for all these muted neutrals. Combining it with the Rose Quartz, a little bit of light pink, makes the collection special and sets it apart from the usual neutral combinations.
Create your own masterpiece
So if you are looking for a sophisticated pattern set up for a scrappy look, the X & + pattern is the right one for you! Combine it with Zen Chic’s new Celestial collection and you will create a masterpiece for your home.
