This block is “on point”!
If you have been following Moda Blockheads 2020 for a while, you may recognize this block. It was my contribution and block number 19 in May of this year. This pillow was one of the examples of what you could do with that block. Today we are giving it some more deserved love and attention.
This Compass Point block is pretty to see in a pillow especially if you work with contrasting fabrics. These make the Compass stars really pop. Before, the fabrics I used for this pillow were a taste of what was to come, but now you can buy the Quotation collection in quilting shops and make this very pillow for your own couch or favorite chair.
Let’s look at the fabrics a little closer. For the Compass Block pillow, I’ve used a combination of different fabrics from the Quotation line and a former Zen Chic collection called Paper. It’s a perfect mix of colors and white tones, don’t you think?
Regarding the sewing technique I have to be honest and tell you, it’s not a beginner-friendly block to make. It’s called an 8-point-star-block which means that you have 8 points directing to the center which can give a lot of bulk from the seam allowances.
So to get very precise and accurate results, the best thing would be using the Foundation Paper Piecing Technique for this particular block. And then it’s an easy task.
To teach you how to sew this block accurately, I have made a YouTube tutorial. You can find the download link for the block pattern below.

BLOCK #52
INTERSECTION
Let’s jump back to the block of this week in the Moda Blockheads Quilt Along for 2020. The designer of the week is Stacy Iest Hsu. She made a block for our sampler quilts called Intersection.
It is a nice taste of what is to come from Stacy in January. She is launching her new collection On The Go with patterns of cars and trucks, roads and intersections plus the fabrics to use in these patterns. So if you want to make a nice quilt for a little boy or girl, Stacy is your woman.
I’m in my blue-purple section of my sampler quilt. What about you? In what colors are you going to make this block? Show us in the Moda Blockheads Facebook group.
And while you’re in there, don’t forget to answer the question Stacy is asking you. With a simple answer (and there is no wrong or right one!) you can win a Layer Cake of Stacy’s collection On The Farm. How generous of Moda, right, to give that away?!
I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you. Good luck and happy quilting!
