When I saw this week’s block for Fat Quarter Shop’s Quilt Along, the opposites of the triangles in the design made me think of Escher.
You probably know this Dutch artist from the impossible artwork he produced, like the “Relativity” piece with all the up and down going stairs. But I was thinking of his piece “Day and Night”, you know where black and white swans fly in opposite directions above a checkered field.
This week’s block called Noble, designed by Susan Ache has a likewise pattern with black and white meeting in the middle. Opposites attract, right? Every block in the sampler quilt becomes a piece of art. And that’s what I like with this Quilt Along. We get to play around with all kinds of blocks, get to know the designers and their creative hearts, plus end up with an awesome quilt at the end.
Talking about designers, Susan Ache is very popular on Instagram under the name @yardgrl60. When landing on her account, you can see she loves light and bright colors. In fact, her living room in Florida is an example of light and bright, with the occasional orange color in all kinds of shades: her favorite.
Because of the design of the block, I have chosen true opposites for my fabrics this week. My block is a mixture of Spotted Steel and Pindot White from the Paper collection.
Besides quilting, Susan loves to cross-stitch. She is a great fan of Aurifil Thread because of this interest. And Aurifil happens to be a sponsor in the Sewcialites Quilt Along. So if you post your block on Instagram, you are in the draw of a wonderful price from one of the sponsors. It could be Aurifil, or maybe it’s Moda or Stella Lightning this month, who knows? Make sure your post has the hashtag #SewcialitesQAL, so FQS can find it.
Something else to keep an eye out for is the Friday broadcast on YouTube. Kimberley from Fat Quater Shop is quilting along with us, so it’s a great opportunity to really quilt along with others. Every Friday at 9 am CDT the party starts. So make sure you have your fabrics and all other essentials ready. And don’t forget that cup of coffee!
When your Noble block is done, we would love for you to show it in the Sewcialites Lounge. The Facebook group is a great community of dedicated quilters who help each other out and cheer each other on. Are you a member yet?
Have fun this week with Susan’s block.
Happy quilting!

Can you believe the Sewcialites Quilt Along is almost over? I almost say, because even though the free blocks are all shared in the quilting community, we still have a quilt to make. In this blog post I am giving some tips on how to put together the final layout I created and what materials you will need for it. And last but not least, let's take a look at what the other quilters made of this beautiful sampler quilt!
